PORT TOWNSEND — Think Mardi Gras on wheels. Toss in a little Boeing ingenuity, mix well with modern sculpture and sprinkle liberally with Shakespearean wit, and you've got yourself a kinetic-sculpture race.

Early each October — this year's race is Sunday — the salty streets of this bayside town erupt in displays of creative madness: a colorful combination of art, engineering and theater with an edge of friendly competition. After constructing human-powered road-, sand-, mud- and sea-worthy sculptures, the self-proclaimed "kineticnauts" test their contraptions' mettle on an eight-mile obstacle course. Everything they need for the race (from pontoons to repair kits to Power Bars) must be contained within the sculpture.

2006 Parade. Three understudies looking marvelous seeking a bit part in a big production.

"The unique thing about this race is that it's a blending of engineering and art," said race archivist Louis Hightower. "These are frustrated engineers who want to be artists, or artists who feel like they need to expand their engineering prowess — it's a right brain/left brain thing, and teams usually consist of both." PORT TOWNSEND -- Racers, get ready to peddle, push, row or otherwise humanly power those kinetic contraptions to the finish line for the 24th annual Port Townsend Bay Kinetic Sculpture Race beginning this weekend.

Events start Friday with a slew of activities taking place through Sunday.

So far, 15 racers have signed up to see what their mobile sculptures have got.

Some racers have spent all year fine tuning their engineering works of art.

The sculptures must be able to go through mud, also known as the ``dismal bog,'' float on water and transverse hilly neighborhoods.

This year's theme is Follywood, so racers and spectators alike are encouraged to dress as their favorite movie stars.

One twist on the typical, run-of-the-mill race that the Kinetic Sculpture Race provides is that the top prize is known as the Mediocrity Award.

It goes to the sculpture that finishes in the very middle of the pack.

One might wonder how to strategize to win such an award, and that is anybody's guess.

But the point is it's not whether you win or lose, but whether you have fun while doing it and make a true spectacle of yourself.

Throughout the race, kinetic kops will be roaming around ready to bust any racer for improper activities and issue a citation.

But, unlike real cops, the kinetic kops encourage bribes and are quick to accept them.

From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, an early ``K-Bird'' hospitality party will take place at Port Townsend Brewing Co., 330 10th St..

On Saturday at 10:30 a.m., racers, their sculptures and Wanna-Be Parade participants will assemble for the parade that begins at noon at U.S. Bank, 1239 Water St., and ends at Monroe Street.

Break and floating tests for the registered sculptures happens at 1 p.m. at the corner of Monroe and Water streets.

The big koronation and kostume ball will take place at 8 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 209 Monroe St.

Sunday is the big race, where participating sculptures line up at Port Townsend City Hall, 250 Madison St., at 10:30 a.m.

The race begins at noon, with the route including Fort Worden State Park, the Jefferson County Fairgrounds and Kinetic Koffee Kompany, 520 Kearney St.

The race will conclude back at City Hall at about 5 p.m.

Awards will be given at American Legion Hall at about 5:30 p.m.

To wrap up the weekend's events, a ``Survivor's Post-Party'' will get under way following the award ceremony at the American Legion Hall at about 6 p.m.

An annual event since 1983, the race is sponsored by the Port Townsend Kinetic Konsortium.

Glamorous, trendy and chic people (with a klever Kinetic twist, naturally) are encouraged to attend and participate in this weekend's 24th annual Great Port Townsend Bay Kinetic Skulpture Race. The kostumed theme is "Follywood."

For newcomers to Port Townsend and Jefferson County, the Kinetic festival is unlike most anything you've ever seen. Imagine Halloween on steroids.

For those folks who have been around for past events, you know what is expected: kolorful kostumes, bribes for Kinetic Kops, and plenty of frivolity with the ultimate goal of mediocrity.

"It's a time to play," says Janet Emery, Kinetic High Priestess for Life. "We don't take ourselves too seriously."

Anywhere from 15 to 20 skulptures of varying sizes and professionalism are expected for the race. They range from hometown favorite Ray Grier's duct tape special to actual engineering marvels. (Read More)

If you've ever seen a Kinetic Skulpture race, you've probably seen John Montgomery or his sons, Gabe and Forrest, pedaling along in John's invention, the Autocanoe.

Basically a canoe on wheels, it goes on land or water, making it the perfect all-purpose vehicle for Port Townsend.

Now, Montgomery is peddling vehicles that are an equally good match for the community -- EVs, electric-powered vehicles.

And one of the pilots threw his back out when he sat down on the beach to put his socks on.

But other than that, how did they like the race?

``It was wonderful,'' said Allen Brown. ``It was a joy.''

Brown, along with Dave Neiman and Dave Maxfield, is a member of the Frogasaurus Rex team, who took the ``Unluckiest'' award at Sunday's Great Port Townsend Bay Kinetic Skulpture Race. But neither the luck nor the windy weather discouraged neither the racers or the people who came to watch the race.

``It's so out there, it's insane,'' said Reggie Yates. ``Even with this weather, you known it's going to be a fun race.''

Yates and a film crew from Britain were in town to tape the race for a show for BBC's children's show called ``Only in America.''

They focused on the youngsters in the race, which features homemade vehicles completing a course that covers land and water, sand and mud. " (more)

"For the first time in its 23-year history, a kourse korrection was required at the Great Port Townsend Bay Kinetic Skulpture Race.

The white kaps in the bay were so foreboding Sunday morning that a konference of kourse and city officials was kwickly konvened. All konkurred to move the water segment of the kourse to the protected area at the Fort Worden State Park pier, next to the kwicksand kourse.

The stiff, chilly winds failed to deter anyone from the pre-race ceremonies, not even the BBC crew filming the event for its children's TV series, "Only in America."

After surviving the beach and water at Fort Worden, the 16 entrants endured an especially windy and More-Dismal-Than-Usual Bog churned up at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.

A stalwart krowd cheered and hooted as some teams slogged through the mud the hard way while others bribed their way down the sidelines. "Look the other way everyone, the judges are cheating!" Efra announced as Supreme Kourt reversed its motion and was lifted out of what had appeared to be a permanent restraining order of knee-deep mud." (more)

The insanity began 36 years ago in California, where Hobart Brown, a sculptor from Ferndale, gave his son's broken tricycle a makeover that transformed it into a 6-foot-tall work of art that he decided to ride. The ride became a race in which winning is losing, cheating is encouraged, crazy is sane, average is prized and a vehicle breakdown will earn you bragging rights.

The race is now an annual event not only in Baltimore but also in Poland, Australia and throughout the United States.

Although the race is more light-hearted than competitive with its silly awards that range from "best breakdown" to "best bribe," Brown, 71, takes seriously the top prize, the "mediocre award" - given to the team whose vehicle finishes in the dead center."People think that being mediocre is not good and that being the best is better. But the best is too extreme. After all, average human beings keep the world running," he said. "Think about it: Isn't the best part of the watermelon its center?" (more)

In 1983, the Greater Port Townsend Bay Kinetic Sculpture Race was held, making the Port Townsend the second (third) oldest race on the ever growing Kinetic Racing circuit.

The Port Townsend race still holds to the original values and spirit of the first race held in Ferndale. Relying on grass roots support, the Port Townsend race is one of the few remaining kinetic races that are not owned by a corporation.

Hmmm. Let this be a lesson to all you wanna-a-be "johhny on the spot" roving reporters - double check your connections. Although, my ears were on (digital headphones connected to the Sony WCS-999, three channel receiver) and the audio sounded fine, when my only camcorder battery became drained, it was discovered that the cool Sony wireless receiver was NOT plugged into the camera...therefore, when the camera got out of its built-in microphone ranage, the conversations were not recorded on the tape. Big bummer.

Well, today hopefully we will capture what people have to say during the big race.

“We’re looking forward to a great weekend, and we’ll have fun even if the sun comes out,” says Janet Emery, Kinetic High Priestess for Life.

Seventeen skulptures had registered as of Tuesday morning, including one from California and two from Oregon. “In reality we’ll probably have in the 20s, so it will be a competitive field,” Emery notes.

Register your skulpture by calling Emery, 379-4972, at her Kinetic Koffee Kompany on Kearney Street in Port Townsend.

Kinetic skulptures must be human-powered and kapable of traversing paved roads, navigating Port Townsend Bay from Tyler Street beach to Monroe Street, the Kwicksand at Fort Worden State Park beach, and the glorious Dismal Bog mud pit at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds. Kinetic racers and fans must be kapable of having fun without taking the event too seriously. Mediocrity is prized – so the skulpture that finishes in the middle of the pack wins the highest award. Kinetic Skulpture Race gets moving this weekend

"PORT TOWNSEND -- Only in America does a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance.

Only in America do people order a double cheeseburger, large fries and a diet Coke.

And only in America do banks leave the doors open and chain the pens to the desk.

And only in America can you see 12-year-old Gabe Montgomery of Port Townsend ``Go for the Glory'' in the Great Port Townsend Bay Kinetic Skulpture Race.
Or, if you live in the United Kingdom, on a CBBC children's television program.

``The name of the show is `Only in America,' '' said Michael Bittman.

``They mainly want to focus on teams with kids on board.''

Seven-mile course

Bittman is Kourse Kommissioner for the race -- we're in the krazy world of kinetic phonetics here -- that pits homemade, human-powered vehicles against a grueling, 7-mile course over water, sand and mud.

This Sunday, a film crew from Britain, along with the pop-culture celebrity hosts of the show ``Only in America,'' will be in town to capture the excitement of this annual excursion into counter-culture transportation.

``It's kind of cool,'' said Janet Emery, Kinetic Skupture Race president, of the international exposure.

The Autocanoe Is a Pedal Powered Amphibious Recumbent Tricycle and a Roadable Pedal Canoe! PTRace2000: "This weekend I participated in the Port Townsend Kinetic Skulpture Race. This race is an annual event, this year was it's 18th year. The race is designed and built after the original Kinetic Skulpture Race started some 30 years ago by a man by the name of Hobart Brown. He built a tricycle of sorts in his living room, hoping to design it in such a way that would allow it to ride over land and through water, and thus the race was started. Now every year people gather at the various official kinetic skulpture races that are held around the world to race their creations against each other. Since the original plan of making the skulpture able to go through water and across land, many of the races now also have an additional portion. In some places, it's a length of sand dune, in Port Townsend, it's THE DISMAL BOG. This year there were 22 entries in the race, and each of us had to be able to tackle not only the road and water portions of the kourse, but also THE DISMAL BOG. THE DISMAL BOG consisted this year of about 2 feet of standing water on top of some truly horrible muddy mud, with bits of hay bales and other odds and ends floating in it. It was a pretty good DISMAL BOG.

So the story goes like this: Last year I went to the race, and watched all these amazing contraptions constructed to be able to handle the complexities of the kourse. There were a wide variety of displays of ingenuity and creativity, and a subsequently wide variety of designs implemented. Some of the kinetic skultures were as follows:"

Another planning meeting is set at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30 at the American Legion Hall downtown to recruit and train event volunteers for the Oct. 2-3 kinetic events. People for the safety boat patrol are particularly needed. A short-bed trailer is needed to serve as a portable stage.

Kinetic Skulpture Race Video Blogging WorkShop Saturaday 2:30ish

A Video Blogging WorkShop will be held at Digital Port Townsend (215 Taylor Street, 2 doors down from the historic Rose Theater) for digital camcorder attendees of the 23rd Great Port Townsend Bay Kinetic Skulpture Race on Saturday October 1 around 2:30ish.

Digital Port Townsend has a Microsoft Media Center PC connected to a Optoma DLP Projector, a Kenwood surround-sound receiver and two tower Athena speakers.

The Video Blogging WorkShop will be held after the parade (noon) and the Brake/Floatation Tests.

The focus of the workshop will be to show attendees that participate in the two-day video blogging kontest how to shoot and upload video to the internet.
